FORTNITE’s newest update has seen Epic add a new feature to Fortnite on Switch – and it’s actually a much bigger update than it seems to have been given credit for.
Epic has posted the patch notes for version 6.21 of Fortnite – and it could mean pretty big news for the game.
Hidden amongst loads of new updates about balloons and various bug fixes, there’s a note about how the game will change on Nintendo Switch with this patch.
The update simply reads:
“Added support for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and newer versions of PS4 and Xbox One controllers on Mac.”
So why is that such a big deal? Allow us to explain.
The Pro Controller is more in line with the sort of pad you’d use on Xbox One or PS4, and allows players greater control and better reflex training on the hybrid handheld console.
Aside from Switch players now having a better chance at holding their own against players on other consoles (via cross-play), this also means Switch players might stand more of a chance in the competitive modes (which were introduced to the game last month).
As cross-play becomes more likely to be the future of the game, making the playing field as level as possible across all platforms is going to become more vital – and we’re happy to see Epic has finally done what it can to address the balance in Fortnite.
This is especially important since recent figures reveal a massive amount of Switch owners play Fortnite.
A recent reveal by Nintendo suggests that the game can now be found on nearly half of all Switch devices – considering the most recently released stats note that the Switch has seen about 22 million sales, we can estimate that 10 million of those (at least!) have Fortnite downloaded on them.
So this update – allowing players to enjoy the game with a Pro controller, is good news for 10,000,000 people. Not bad!
